Note from Convenor

Dear Members and Friends,

Wishing you all the best for 2015

Thankyou all our loyal members and friends for your wonderful support through the year. Let’s look forward to being able to enjoy our park forever more!

Our thanks to the incoming Victorian Labor Government for the promise to cancel of the project and the Greens for their stand against the EW Link. Thank you to the hundreds of community organisations, local councils, in particular Yarra, Moreland, Moonee Valley and Darebin, inner city residents and local MP’s. Everyone who fought helped save our precious Royal Park.

However there are still outstanding issues to be resolved eg the inclusion of Royal Park on the State Heritage Register and the need to delete exemptions provided by the Napthine Government for the East West Link to be constructed through the Park.

The fight will continue  in the New Year.

When the EWL contracts are finally cancelled we plan to hold a big celebration in the park.

Yours sincerely
Paul Leitinger
Convenor – Royal Park Protection Group Inc.

Postcard delivery

Thank you to everyone who sent in a post card.

postcardWe provided details of origin before the election and now the actual cards have gone to Daniel Andrews.

Cards demonstrated that this was not just an inner city issue.

Citizen Award – Well done everyone!

Hello everyone,
awardHere is a note about the Yarra Community award given to all of us for our efforts to stop the East West link and save our wonderful Royal Park. A lovely gesture by Yarra. I have included the email advising us of the award.
Kind regards
Anne Phefley
Secretary, RPPG

Dear Award Winners

Many of you may have caught up with the news that Yarra Council awarded the Community Service of the Year Award to EVERYONE who campaigned against the East West Link at their Australia Day citizenship ceremony yesterday.

A wonderful recognition of the hard work, commitment, creativeness and tenacity that everyone contributed to the campaign, and of the gratitude of the Yarra community.

Many thanks to Marion Crooke for thinking of and organising the nomination!

2.This paper in the latest issue of Environmental Health Perspectives indicates that metropolitan nature spaces have positive effects on human health:

http://ehp.niehs.nih.gov/1408216/

We know from many other papers that light pollution has adverse effects on human and wildlife health.  So this paper allows us to say there appears to be an additional adverse effect on human health resulting from the adverse effects of light pollution on wildlife health in metropolitan nature spaces.

Save The Park

Speak up to save Royal Park.

The Royal Park is the only bushland park in the City of Melbourne — just two kilometres from the GPO. The Royal Park is public land. It belongs to all Victorians. We hold it in trust for future generations.
As early as 1862, Town Clerk Mr E G Fitzgibbon protested the further alienation of the park.
“Hands off the parks” was his battle cry. It needs to be our battle cry.

The proposed tollway will destroy Ross Straw field and West Parkville with huge flyovers joining City Link. It will ruin the wetlands. It will butcher the park from Flemington Road to Royal Parade with huge on/off ramps into Elliot Avenue. It will pump pollution into the “lungs of the city”
It will take priceless parkland that can never be replaced.
To save Royal Park we need to stop E.W. Link
